The cucumber is a creeping plant that roots in the ground and climbs trellises or other supports, twining around them with fine, spiraling tendrils. The plant has large leaves that form a covering over the fruit. The cucumber fruit is roughly cylindrical, elongated with narrow ends, and can reach 60 centimeters in length and 10 centimeters in diameter. Because it has a closed seed and develops from a flower, cucumbers are botanically classified as fruits. However, like tomatoes and squash, they are often considered vegetables and are prepared and eaten as such. Cucumbers typically contain more than 90% water.
