The bell pepper, also known as chili pepper, is a cultivar of the Capsicum annuum species. Different cultivars of the plant produce fruits of various colors: red, yellow, orange, and green. Green bell peppers, along with other mild varieties, are often considered sweet peppers. Bell peppers originated in Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. Their seeds were brought to Spain in 1493, and from there the plant spread to other European, African, and Asian countries. Today, China is the world’s leading producer of bell peppers, followed by Mexico.
